The Niagara IceDogs have dealt their first round pick before ever suiting up for a game.
The IceDogs dealt Lucas Lessio to the Oshawa Generals for a second round pick in 2010 and a conditional 15th rounder in 2011. The 15th round pick becomes a second round pick in 2012 and 2013 should Lessio play one year in the OHL. If the 16-year-old plays two or more seasons in the league, Niagara would also pick up additional third and fourth round picks.
Niagara also picked up the 8th overall pick in the 2010 draft as compensation for Lessio not reporting. The pick comes under new league rules that promote the selection of the best player available, regardless of whether the player is threatening to play college hockey.
Lessio, who will suit up for the St. Michael's Buzzers of the Ontario Provincial (Tier II) League, was selected seventh overall by the IceDogs. He reported to the IceDogs training camp but left after 48 hours to maintain his NCAA eligibility. He is reportedly considering an offer from the University of Michigan.
